Parkour park Wageningen and rain shelter

At this moment it is worked on the realization of a parkour park in Wageningen and attempt to obtain a shelter from rain. Until the realization, this page will contain information about the process. Afterwards, information about the park and the shelter can be found here. At both locations it shall be possible to train freely as well as to join classes. This means that everyone can visit the place for free and use it for training. Classes and instructions will be offered if there is sufficent interest. If you have any suggestions for the park or shelter, just send an e-mail.

Parkour park

There are some possibilities for training throughout Wageningen. However, these posibiletys are very spread and it is difficult to find a location suitable for everyone. At the Aula children can greatly train some vaults, but for taller people there is nothing to do. Also the type of desired training matters. Furthermore these isolated spots do not allow combinations of moves, heance little flow training. They are great for a longer run so, a part which is often forgotten about. Upgrading this spots with some extras could make them siuted for small training and playing "the ground is from lava". However, it would not be sufficent for creativety and offer a lot of variabilety. It is also possible to upgade some longer runs through the city, but this will be difficult in regaard of permissions. Furthermore the issues of the upgrades remains. Therefore a place with lots of different options and allowing many combinations would be very useful.
This place can even be made in a way that it can be used by many different people. A wall which a student uses for a monkey vault can be used by a child for a wallrun or by someone for stretching. Low rails can be used for precision jumps and balance. Higher bars can be used for lache or just pull and muscle ups. (For information on what the different names of the moves mean klick here.) This means traceurs and traceuses can use it as well as children and older people. Older people can use it for fitness (pull ups, balance, muscle ups etc.) and children have a playground where they can be very creative and find their own limits and chalenge them. This means that many different people can come together in such a place, increasing their social bond.
Another advantage of such a park is that people will feel more comfortable to start training together with other people who are helping instead of doing some small precision jumps on a kerbside alone on a busy place. Finally, such a park will allow the exchange of different training ideas. More information on this discussion will be available in Dutch soon.

Three locations are considered. These are the old business area behind Hoogvliet, an old school and the park near Dijkgraaf and North-West.
After the demoolishment of the old bussines area there is enough space for a great parkour park. It is very central as well.
The old school is very central beeing close to the olimpiaplein and it might offer a rain shelter as well. However, not a lot of space is available and due toe trees and it gives a private instead of a public impressionn.
In the park near north-west and Dijkgraaf it might be possible to combine a parkour park with the scatepark (suitable rails) and some options for slacklining (poles with different distances) and even a nature part.
Therefore the park in North-West seams to be the best option. More information on this three options including some designs will follow soon.

Every year the municipality offers 20.000 € to sponsor the realization of an open air sport project. Examples are the Skating Bridge, mini-artificial pitch and trike trail. More information can be found in Dutch here. For a parkour project approxemetly 10.000€ are available. This numbers are not confirmed. They are only indicational and estimates. The parkour project can also be seen as a playground project. The asspect of safty has to be considered.

It is worked on this project together with Nicolette from Sportservice Wageningen and Paul-Peter from the municipality.

Rain shelter

Rain and water in general can make surfaces very slippery. This makes slides much easyier, but other movements like rail precisions much more difficult and even dangerous. This makes it difficult to have (regular) training sessions, especially in winter. Because of this a sheltered location for training on rainy days would be very useful. Therefore it is looked for places in or around Wageningen which could provide such a shelter.

There are some passages in Wageningen, but most of them are not suited for practicing. The issue with these passages is that they do not provide any obstacles to practice with. Some of them are also very crowded so that conditioning is no option either. The only place which might allow a bit of training is at the crossing of the Plantsoen and the Schuijlensteeg. Unfortunately not all fences are strong enough to train with and the space is very limited. This makes it very difficult to train with a group. Furthermore, without a storing place it is not possible to extend the possibilities for training except of adding some precision trainers.

The barn at the LEEF festival could be an option as well. In theory vault boxes could be placed and stored there. However, there are two ships placed. They take some space away and it can not be guaranteed that they will remain intact as they can appear to some people as nice obstacles. Finaly the owner of the place has strict criteria about its use and does not want new users.

Two other options are the old number central from KPN and an empty school.
A look through the door of the number central from KPN suggests that the building already offers some opportunities like staircases. It also seems that this location offers enough space to set up vault boxes and other materials. Further more this location is quite central as it is located close to Emmaus.
Even more central might be an old and empty school near Olympiaplein. In front of the door are threes which already make it a little parkour. Inside do not yet seem to be a lot of options. However, there seem to be some smaller classrooms which might be great for workshops and small groups. In one room one vault or a combination of about tree can be practiced.
From the outside they seem to be great options. For a better assessment of the possibilities of these two buildings the places need to be visited from the inside.
Both places have probably disadvantage. They are only accessible with a key and have to be kept clean. This means that it will probably not possebile for everyone to use them as spontaniously as an shelter without doors. A responsible person with a key would have to be present.

In the moment there is contact with the cultuurmakelaar from Wageningen. The aim is to find a space which can be used for free during rain. This will make it possible for everyone to use it - no entrance fee needed.
